What are restrictive lists and which are the most important for compliance?

In compliance, restrictive lists are fundamental tools to prevent companies from becoming vehicles for illicit activities. These databases, managed by governmental and international organizations, identify individuals and entities involved in terrorism, drug trafficking, arms proliferation, and financial fraud.

The critical lists that every company in LatAm must monitor:

To operate safely in the global financial system, it is not enough to review local bulletins. There are four mandatory consultation pillars:

  • OFAC List (U.S.): managed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Being on this list means a total "block" of the financial system in dollars.

  • UN Security Council Lists: mandatory compliance for all member countries, primarily focused on financing terrorism.

  • European Union Lists: crucial for companies with business relationships in the European continent.

  • INTERPOL Notifications: identify fugitives from international justice for financial crimes and other offenses.

The risk of "matches" (false positives)

One of the biggest challenges is managing homonyms. A deficient system can halt a legitimate operation due to a similar name. This is where technology makes a difference, allowing filtering by date of birth, identity document, or nationality.
